What is the treatment for hair fall in both Men and Women?

We know that hair loss can be distressing to both men and women alike. We have glorified good hair as a marker of youth and good health in our society. So if you are too stressed about losing a lot of hair daily, worried about thinning of hair, receding hairline, or going bald, this short blog will help you understand how to control and prevent hair fall and what the treatment options for hair loss are.

1. It is normal to lose a little hair every day

Almost all of us notice hair loss when we comb and find hair stuck to the hairbrush or at the time of the shower when we see a lot of hair near the drain. Both men and women typically lose 80-100 hair from the head daily. These are the hair that is shed after completing its growth by passing through all the stages of the hair cycle and are replaced by new hair. You cannot stop or prevent this kind of hair loss as it is a part of the normal process of hair growth.

2. Identify the cause of your hair fall

Hair fall can be because of genetic factors (where baldness or sparse, thin hair runs in your family), environmental and lifestyle factors (pollution, smoking, stress, etc.), or medical reasons (Dietary deficiencies, medical diseases, hormonal imbalance, drugs, aging, etc.). We have noticed that it is not one but a combination of factors that can contribute to hair fall in our patients, and hence a multi-modality approach is the best way to treat it.

3. Visit a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist

Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are best trained to treat hair loss and perform hair transplants. They will help identify the right cause of hair fall by physical examination (Tug/Pull Test), Trichoscopic Analysis (Examination of hair and scalp under magnification), and Blood tests to rule out various medical causes of hair loss. The common medical conditions causing hair loss are iron deficiency anemia, thyroid diseases, Polycystic Ovarian Disease PCOD, Zinc and Vitamin deficiencies, Hormonal imbalances, etc.).

4. Medical Management of Hair Loss

Identifying and treating the cause helps reduce and prevent further hair fall in most cases. Apart from dietary and lifestyle modifications, certain hair supplements are started which are required to support the growth and maintain healthy hair. Certain medications known to prevent hair fall and promote hair growth like minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, etc. are started after a thorough medical examination and explaining the side effects.

5. Adjuvant therapies to reduce hair fall and stimulate hair growth

These treatments, when performed at regular intervals over multiple sessions, help prevent hair fall and stimulate hair growth. These include microneedling,  enriched with additional growth factors, Mesotherapy, Low-level laser therapy, etc.

Microneedling helps improve the blood supply to your scalp.

Platelet-rich plasma releases growth factors necessary to stimulate hair growth, improve blood supply, and boost the microenvironment.

In mesotherapy for hair or Mesohair, vitamins, pharmaceuticals, enzymes, hormones, natural plant extracts, bioactive substances, Nanopeptides, Acetyl tetrapeptide-3, Vitamins, Biochanin- A, Minoxidil, Dutasteride, Finasteride, Dexenol, etc. are injected into the scalp in various combinations using fine microneedles. Mesotherapy improves the microcirculation of the scalp, provides nutrients and medication that stimulate hair growth, slow down the shrinkage of hair follicles, and reduces hair fall.

Low-level lasers are known to stimulate hair follicles, reduce hair fall and promote hair growth.

6. Hair Transplant is a safe and excellent treatment for baldness

If you have already lost a significant amount of hair or are suffering from baldness, a hair transplant allows you to regrow your hair and restore your hairline naturally. For areas with sparse hair and visible scalp, a hair transplant improves the density of hair and prevents any bald patches from being seen. The hair follicles are taken from the back of your scalp and are rarely affected by hair loss. These hair are usually resistant to hair fall; hence most transplanted hair retain these characteristics and are the last to fall. FUE and FUT are two common techniques of hair transplant. Occasionally a combination of techniques is required for large-volume hair transplants. We are skilled at both these techniques, however, prefer the FUE technique for our hair transplants.
