Normal appearing ears add balance to the facial frame; however, in 5 % of people, the ears stick out and are more prominent. This often attracts a lot of ridicule, teasing and name-calling, especially among children, affecting their self-esteem and causing psychosocial trauma. Fortunately, prominent ear correction can reduce the protrusion of ears making it less conspicuous and look more natural.
Prominent ear correction, also known as Otoplasty, is the surgery for protruding ears. The protruding ears usually also lack the formation of the anti-helical fold and or have an excessively deep cup of the ear which can be corrected during this procedure. Otoplasty is typically performed on both ears to optimise symmetry. Otoplasty can be performed at any age after 6 years of age once they have reached 90% of adult size. However, it should be known that it won’t change the location of your ears or alter your ability to hear.
These Otoplasty before and after pictures represent actual patients from Dr. Sudhanva. They will help to assist you in understanding your various options and enable you to set realistic goals for your own surgical outcome. Click on a patient for their specific case details.

Prominent ear correction or Otoplasty is usually performed as a daycare procedure under local anaesthesia with sedation. In children, general anaesthesia is preferred. It usually takes 90 mins to 2 hours for the procedure. It is performed through a small hidden incision along the crease behind the ears.
The size of the ear is reduced by removing some cartilage and the shape modified to create natural ear folds with the help of sutures. The ears are set back closer to the scalp with the help of sutures. A dressing covering your ears will be left in place.
Since it’s a daycare procedure, you will be observed for a few hours post-procedure and then discharged the same evening. Some swelling and redness is expected post-procedure, which usually completely recovers by 6-8 weeks. Avoid sleeping on your sides to keep pressure off your ears.
A loose headband is advised at night until full recovery at bedtime to avoid your ears from getting pulled while rolling in bed. Consider wearing button-down shirts and avoid tee shirts until recovery. The result of surgery is dramatic and immediately visible. Post-operative instructions, medications, and emergency contact details are shared.
You will follow up with Dr. Sudhanva 5-7 days and 10-14 days after the procedure. Additional follow-ups are advised at 6 weeks,12 weeks, and 12 months after your surgery.
