Women love to wear earrings as it highlights their face, making it look more beautiful and charming. A simple ornament that helps compliment your natural beauty. A torn lobe or widened ear piercing hole can prevent you from wearing earrings and also look unsightly. Many women tape the widened ear hole to allow them to wear earrings but are also always worried about the earrings falling off from the loosened hole. Earlobe repair is a small daycare procedure that allows you to wear your favorite earrings snugly again.
The weight of the earrings over the years can enlarge the ear-piercing hole, making it look unsightly sometimes even torn. Ear lobule piercing can also tear or widen due to infection, pressure necrosis, low placement or trauma as a result of accidental entanglement of earrings. Repair of the torn earlobe is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthesia. The edges of the torn earlobes are trimmed and sutured together to give symmetric, natural-looking ear lobules. The ear can be re-pierced at a different point, 1 month post-procedure.

Details of Ear Lobe Repair in a Capsule
Can you repair my earlobe without surgery?
No. As the ear-piercing hole widens, the skin grows into the gap of the widened hole. Any repair performed without surgically removing the ingrown skin and suturing it back is just as good as taping or applying glue. There are no glues or fillers that can hold this skin together against the pressure of earrings. There are many untrained people or parlours who offer these alternatives and often leave you with unhappy results or even complications like burns and poor scars.
What is earlobe repair with glue?
Earlobe repair with glue is performed by certain untrained practitioners and non-medicos. It is made popular and even offered to be performed in the comfort of your homes. They apply acid to freshen the edges and hope to stick the ear lobule without surgery. We have treated many cases where the ear lobes have got burnt, even necrosed/destroyed or dead after the acid has burnt it completely. Since there is no repair of tissues the glue technique results often breaks down within 3-6 months, requiring surgical ear lobe repair which is technically more difficult as the tissues are burnt.
Will the scars be visible?
A fine line is expected post-surgery, which usually becomes less and less conspicuous over time.
What are the potential risks and complications of a torn earlobe repair?
The specific risks and complications associated with your earlobe repair surgery will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Sudhanva.
Will my insurance cover torn earlobe repair?
No, Earlobe repair is a purely cosmetic procedure not covered under any insurance.
When can I re-pierce my ear?
Re-piercing is advised after 4 weeks post-surgery at an alternative site other than the suture line.
Can ear keloids be treated?
Yes, ear keloids can be treated depending on the stage of presentation. Because of high propensity of recurrence in keloids, a multi-modality approach of triamcinolone injections, surgery, pressure clips etc. is commonly used. For recurrent keloids, various novel approaches are used for treatment.
