The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 2–4 hours depending on the procedure. Several factors, including the size of the breasts, decide the technique of breast reduction. Excess skin, fat and breast glandular tissue are excised, and breasts are reshaped to smaller, firmer breasts.
The stretched areolae are also reduced to an optimum size. Drains are placed for 24-48 hours to avoid any blood or fluid collection underneath the breasts.

What is the most important factor to consider while deciding to get a breast reduction?
Scars are the most important factor to influence your decision of a breast reduction. Perky, smaller, attractive, higher placed breasts come at the cost of some scars as in any cosmetic surgery.
What is Scarless Breast Reduction?
Scarless breast reduction is the liposuction of the breast. However, it only removes the excess fat from the breast, leaving behind the harder breast tissue. However, it has a limited role as the amount of fat or gland in the breast cannot be calculated beforehand, and this procedure does not lift the breast.
What are the different incisions and surgeries performed for breast reduction?
Depending on the technique of breast reduction, the incisions may be planned around the areola (dark skin around the nipple), vertically extending gently downward from areola to the breast crease and horizontally along the natural breast creases. For moderately large breasts, a lollipop/ circumvertical / Hall Findlay breast reduction is performed where an incision is placed around the areola and a vertical line extending below it.
For severe breast ptosis or larger breasts, inverted T, wise pattern or anchor breast lift is preferred where the incision is similar to lollipop but further extends into the breast crease.

Will the recovery after breast reduction be painful?
